Cataracts

Cataract Treatment

As you age, you can develop cataracts in your eyes.  In the early stages, your vision may seem a little cloudy or unfocused.  If left unattended, your vision will become increasingly impaired.  In fact, more than half of people 80 years or older will experience cataracts.  Fortunately, this is a situation that is easy to care for.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is when eye’s lens becomes cloudy.  Normally, this lens is clear.  When a cataract develops, it can seem that you are looking through a foggy window.  This develops slowly; eyeglasses can be used to improve vision.  Eventually, you may need surgery to correct it.  Fortunately, this is a safe procedure.

Symptoms:

These are signs that you should look for:

  • Cloudy or blurred vision
  • Problems seeing at night
  • Light sensitivity
  • Experiencing a halo effect around lights
  • Requiring brighter lights for normal activities like reading
  • Fading of colors
  • Frequently needing to change your prescription

If you begin to experience any of these issues, it is time to make an appointment with an eye doctor.  Any vision changes need to be checked out.

Causes

The primary reason that cataracts develop is age.  Injuries to the eye can also cause a cataract to form.  For instance, if a corneal transplant or other eye surgery is performed, the patient is at risk of a cataract forming.  Certain genetic disorders and health conditions, such as diabetes, are associated with cataracts.

Formation of Cataracts

Your eye’s lens is located behind the iris, the colored portion of your eye.  Normally, this lens focuses light that enters the eye to create clear images on the retina.  Your lens become thicker and less flexible as you age.  This can cause tissues to degrade and begin to clump together producing cloudy areas on the lens.  As this continues, the cloudiness will worse and grow.  This prevents adequate light and sharp images from getting to your retina.  This produces blurry vision.  Cataracts can develop in both eyes, but they will not generally be at the same stage.

Risk Factors

There are several situations that can increase your risk of developing cataracts.  Age is the most prevalent.  Diabetes, smoking, obesity and high blood pressure can also play a role.   Eye injuries and past eye surgery also increase your risk.
